In Focus at UAS Ketchikan
Rita Fahey and Craig Lundy
Both Fahey and Lundy have not only deliberately chosen to live on this rocky edge of Revillagigedo Island, but also have chosen the similar profession of radiologic technologist. While Ketchikan General Hospital employs both Fahey and Lundy, it is the University of Alaska’s honor to claim them as the first two Ketchikan graduates of the recently inaugurated radiologic technology program.
Sarah Strickling
“Our family loves road trips. We are nomads. We love to travel, attend Powwows, and raise the vibrations. We have tried to live clean and clear, keeping energized and void of toxins. We have spent time peace volunteering and helping people with their spirituality, all while homeschooling our children. I call it ‘riding the magic tortoise’ or ‘flowing with the tao’.”
Clint Shultz
“Although it has been strenuous, I figured that I went to school before, took classes all day, and studied in-between, and I knew I could do it again. In fact, being a civilian going to school is a lot easier than being a Marine and going to school! The Marine Corps helped me with my ability to concentrate and focus on the task at hand.”
Lauren and Alethea Johnson
For Lauren and Alethea Johnson, learning is a holistic endeavor. They share similar educational pursuits and extracurricular interests. Both mindfully cultivate their spiritual growth; they draw on each others’ support, knowing their familial bond is resolute. And it is no coincidence that both women chose to earn their degrees through the University of Alaska Southeast in Ketchikan, using our campus as a stepping-stone to higher ground.
Anastasia Connolly
Kayaking along our local coast and bicycling through our rainforest both take plenty of physical fortitude. Anastasia Connolly has that strength. She has guided tourists on wilderness excursions, using her muscles to propel herself and to lead the group in experiencing our unmatchable region. Connolly’s adventures have not been limited to this Revillagigedo Rock;
Andrew Piston
Piston’s love for nature and the fishy world first led him to his perfect career and most recently has compelled him to pursue his individually tailored Bachelor’s degree. UAS-Ketchikan will facilitate his educational needs, but it is his dedication which will ultimately assure his next success.
Leslie Kayser
“I thought there would be a direct path. There hasn’t been. My educational journey has been a circuitous and enjoyable learning process. Before, I had the idea that success was purely academic success…getting a good grade in a class… but then, during a communications class [speech class] I had a novel thought…. I realized that success was more about enjoying the process of learning and discovery, instead of seeking perfection.”
