Placement Testing
The UASK campus requires that all new students who are degree seeking or planning to enroll in six credits or more take our placement assessments before enrolling in any UAS courses. The testing requirement will be waived for transfer students who provide transcripts for previous college work. Placement results will indicate the starting level for students and may require specific courses as prerequisites to college-level work.
The battery of Mathematics, English, and Computer Skills placement tests can take up to four hours to complete. They do not all have to be completed in one sitting; however, you must complete the essay portion in one sitting. Math and English assessment is conducted with a computer-based program called COMPASS.
The computer skills test consists of a number of hands-on activities to complete. The test is not timed, but should take most users 15-30 minutes to complete. Computer skills are assessed with a program called SAM 2003. A demo version of the software is available for review in the LearningCenter .
Retake policy: Students cannot retake the writing assessment for one year, and they may only retake the math assessment once within one year. Tests may not be used to skip courses in a sequence.
Students who would like to have test results forwarded to another school should provide school contact information, including address, phone number, and fax number. Students will also be asked to sign a Release of Results form which grants us permission to distribute placement results (under 18 requires parental signature).
Beginning August 2005, all placement testing will be assessed a fee. Retakes will be charged an additional $10 per session, subject to the retake policy.
