Wilderness First Responder ODS 193 Wilderness First Responder
A nationally recognized program that trains participants to respond to emergencies in remote settings. The 80-hour curriculum includes standards for urgent and extended care situations. Topics include wound management, infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring, environmental emergencies, and drug therapies. Emphasis is placed on prevention and decision-making. Successful completion earns a WMI of NOLS Wilderness First Responder two-year certification and Adult CPR two-year certification.

kayaking ODS 133 Introduction to Sea Kayaking
Introduces the fundamentals of sea kayaking in Alaska, including most commonly used equipment, techniques, challenges and hazards. Provides instruction in trip planning, transporting boats, preparing to paddle, boat handling, reentry techniques, and kayaking strokes. Emphasizes risk assessment and safety skills. Requires backcountry camping skills and participation in an overnight outing.
Prerequisite: Students must be in good physical condition and are required to sign a risk release form and provide their medical history. Must be enrolled in ODS certificate program.

snowboarding ODS 148 Backcountry Skiing and Snowboarding
This course will present students with skills needed to plan and complete short trips into the backcountry, on days with low avalanche danger, for the purpose of skiing (alpine and telemark) or snowboarding. Topics covered include gear, modes of travel, map reading for skiers and snowboarders, avalanche and other hazards.

Swift water rescue

ODS 193 Swift Water Rescue
An intensive three day class with one day instruction followed by two days developing and practicing water rescue skills. Emphasis is on self rescue, other subjects include water dynamics, handling hazards and obstacles, using rescue equipment, rope systems, in-water rescues and more. Includes manual and materials. Students will earn a Swiftwater Rescue Technician card upon completion.

ODS 193 Backcountry Cooking

Learn to prepare fast and tasty outdoor meals with short preparation time and minimal cleanup. Turn your favorite dish into an easy camping meal. Hands-on practice creating and using an outdoor kitchen. Dietary needs for demanding activities and special eating habits will be discussed.

ODS 193 Basic Firearm Safety
How to identify,safely handle,care for and secure firearms found in Alaska. Laws pertaining to firearm use and ownership. Indoor air gun lab; outdoor pistol and shotgun instruction. Course completion qualifies student for a Hunter Education Certificate.

Introduces the fundamentals of fly fishing, fly tying materials, fly patterns and what to avoid. Fly casting with a rod, differant types of cast and various presentations will be covered as well. Learn about local lakes, streams and saltwater locations.

ODS 205 Backcountry Travel and Navigation
Covers topics in extended backcountry trips, and navigation by map and compass. Students completing the course gain skills necessary to plan and carry out multi-day backpacking trips, and to use common maps to plan routes through unknown terrain. Outings are a required course component.
Prerequisite: Completion of one other ODS course, or instructor permission. Must be enrolled in ODS certificate program.

ODS 206 Outdoor Leadership
This course gives students the opportunity to learn how to lead others in outdoor and adventure settings. The course covers, and gives students opportunities to practice skills required to teach others and lead and manage risk for groups participating in outdoor recreation related pursuits.
 

ODS 293 Avalanche Evaluation and Theory – Level II
An advanced recreational or introductory course in avalanche theory, forecasting and rescue. Topics include leadership and decision making, field stability and evaluation techniques, weather, steeps and sluff management, advanced route finding, group snow pit and fracture profiles. The course combines in-class and field oriented backcountry experience.

ODS 221 Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue Fundamentals
An introduction to the fundamentals of glacier travel and crevasse rescue. Topics include hazard evaluation and risk assessment, selection of personal gear, as well as climbing and safety gear necessary for glacier travel. In addition knots, rope handling, belay, rappelling and various climbing, glacier travel and crevasse rescue techniques will be discussed.
 

ODS 293 ST: Sea Kayaking Level II
A continuation from Introduction to Sea Kayaking. Includes self- and assisted rescue review at a faster pace, stroke review, an introduction to bracing, and recovery techniques without wet exit. Covers trip planning, group management, route selection, navigation, and gear choices. Includes water time on Auke Lake and a 2-night outing to put skills into practice.

ODS 293 Rock Climbing II
Furthers the techniques and builds on Rock Climbing I. Introduces leading and following scenerios, a variety of anchors, and multi-pitch climbing. Emphasis is on safety, route finding, self rescue, and rope management. Students will practice mock leading. Includes a required five-day field trip to Painted Mountain in Haines Junction.

ODS 293 Kayak Rolling
Stay warm and dry (dryer at least) on your kayak adventures by learning to roll. This class focuses on getting you safely and consistently rolling your kayak (whitewater or sea kayak). Additional skills will be covered as time permits.

ODS 393 Moutaineering
Builds on skills taught in Ice Climbing, Rock Climbing, and Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue. Topics include risk assessment, backcountry travel, gear selection and placement, belays, anchors in rock, snow, ice, and vegetation, route selection, and descending techniques. Class includes technical and/or semi-technical ascents of peaks in the Juneau area. Prerequisite: Rock Climbing, Ice Climbing.

SPC 235 Small Group Communication and Team Building
Practical application of the theories of interaction, information sharing, decision making, team building, and problem solving processes to small group situations. Principles of conflict, leadership, group roles, self evaluation, evidence, and reasoning are explored through group observation, practice and analysis.
Prerequisite: ENGL S111 (C or higher) or instructor permission.

PHIL 271 Perspectives on the Natural World
What is wilderness, and what is our relationship to it? Explore the concepts of nature and wilderness from historical and contemporary perspectives of both Western and non-Western cultures. Conclusions reached will be applied to issues concerning ways in which members of contemporary Western society interact with the wilderness. Completion requires participation in overnight class outings.
Prerequisite: ENGL S110 (C or higher) or instructor permission.
