UAS Summer Scholars Program

(A UAS Pre-collegePathway Program)

___________

“The Unfair Advantage”: Experience the wilds of Juneau, challenge yourself academically, and earn college credit all for FREE.

Humanities 193: Environment, Ethics, and the UAS Experience

Description. UAS invites you to be part of an exciting program taking place this summer.  In this series of weekend seminars, you'll get a taste for the UAS interpretation of the liberal arts tradition. Led by Environmental Science Professor Dr. Sonia Nagorski and English Professor Dr. Kevin Maier, the course will feature a series of weekend trips into the wilds surrounding our Juneau campus.  Following a preparatory lecture and discussion on Friday mornings, we'll spend three Saturdays getting a sense for what we like to call the “Unfair Advantage” of UAS.  We'll cruise to Tracy Arm to learn about the marine environment first hand, we'll hike to the John Muir Cabin to discuss the ethical quandaries of the idea of wilderness, and we'll raft the Mendenhall River to get an up-close look at hydrological processes shaping our landscape.

By attending to the ethical choices involved in the field excursions of this class, and by thinking carefully about the ways our actions impact the natural environment more generally, this course will provide the perfect introduction to university life, UAS-style.
