Spring Forum 2010: Animals and Society in Alaska - speakers, story tellers, and a film festival-

The UAS School of Arts and Sciences announces Spring Forum 2010: Animals and Society in Alaska, Friday March 26, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 27, 2 p.m.-10 p.m at the Egan Lecture Hall on the UAS Auke Lake Campus. The event will be an engaging two-day series of discussions, readings, and films. A diverse group of speakers representing the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities will be featured.

Speakers include UAS student Liana Wallace, a lifelong resident of Southeast Alaska who uses stories to describe her experiences growing up on her family’s fishing boat and how Native cultural beliefs affected their interactions with the natural world, former Juneau resident and author Sherry Simpson, Professor of Creative Writing, UAA,  Juneau resident Joel Bennett, film maker and former Alaskan Game Board member, Sine Anahita, Associate Professor of Sociology at UAF, Peter Griffen, District Ranger of the Tongass National Forest and Victor Van Ballenberghe,  wildlife biologist and author of In the Company of Moose. UAS Faculty who will speak at the forum include Jennifer Vernon, Kevin Maier, and Alex Simon. Their research involves human-animal relations in Alaska.
