March
6, 1998 UAS students will be on spring break next week (March 9 -13). The campus and university offices however will remain open. "This has been quit a semester," student government president Rosie Gilbert says. "The stress level is very high. Everything's due right now. It's midterms. We're all ready for a break." Instead of heading south to warm beaches to take that break at least one UAS student is heading north to the Arctic Circle. David Thomas is going caribou hunting by dog sled. Despite his love of cold weather, Thomas says, "Most people are going toward the warmer weather. I hear of people going to Tahiti. My girl friend is going to New Mexico." A group of 11 students are also heading north. UAS Student Activities has organized a trip to Kluane National Park in the Yukon. "They're going to be doing the winter stuff since they can't do it here," according to activities staff member Dave Kleinpeter. "There's a group of people going to jump on the ferry and tour Southeast," Gilbert says. "I know some people who are taking a road trip from Seattle to Mexico and back," Chris Carrier says. He's meeting his family at Tahoe for snowboarding. An exchange student from London is going to see other parts of Alaska by traveling to Anchorage and Fairbanks. Another student is heading to Seattle and Las Vegas. "Everyone I know is outta here," he says. Several who are staying in Juneau say they'll go hiking and camping. One group is boating to a local island for a few days. Not every student has play plans. One is having wisdom teeth removed and plans on recuperating then going to work. Leonard Gone says he'll use the break to catch up on school work. The campus' Egan Library will be open during spring break Monday through Friday during the day. Campus food service will be open as will student housing. "We have activities planned every day," manager Timi Hough says. -30-
