15, 1998 The two finalists for president of the University of Alaska will meet with the public and university community in Juneau. On Wednesday (May 20) a university forum for faculty, students, and staff will be held for Dr. David Toppen from 2 - 3:30 p.m. in the lower level of Egan Library and a public reception take place from 4:30 - 5:45 p.m. in the Mourant Cafe. On Thursday (May 21) a university forum will be held for General Mark Hamilton from 2 - 3:30 p.m. in Egan Library and the public reception will take place from 4:30 - 5:45 p.m. in the Mourant Cafe. Jerome Komisar, who has been UA president for eight years, has submitted his resignation effective at the end of June. A search committee evaluated over 200 candidates and selected the two finalists. Dr. David Toppen has been executive vice president and provost of Lake Superior State University in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan since 1994. He was with the Montana University Systems from 1990 to 1994 and has served in academic positions in California and Massachusetts. He earned his Ph. D. in chemistry from the University of Missouri in 1970. General Mark Hamilton is commanding general of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He has served two tours of duty in Alaska and maintains an Alaska residency. From 1988 to 1990 Hamilton was an artillery division commander at Fort Richardson and from 1992- 1993 he was chief of staff for the Alaska Command at Elmendorf Air Force Base. Hamilton entered the army in 1967. He is a West Point graduate and earned a master's degree from Florida State University. Toppen and Hamilton, along with their wives, are also visiting Anchorage and Fairbanks during this final phase of the presidential selection process.
