June
3, 1998 University of Alaska Southeast Chancellor Marshall Lind announced the appointment of Dr. Mary Lou Madden of Juneau as the interim director of the UAS Ketchikan campus. Both Lind and Madden will visit the Ketchikan campus and community June 11 and 12. Madden will move to Ketchikan to begin her work as campus director in mid July. She replaces Dr. Fran Feinerman who resigned, after eight years as director, to accept the position of president of Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming. "Dr. Madden was chosen," Lind said, "because of her extensive experience in administration and her understanding of higher education in general and the University of Alaska system specifically." "I'm very excited about this appointment," Madden said. "I'm interested in what the university can do in terms of economic development to help Ketchikan in this time of transition, and I want to show that the university can bring additional resources to the community." Lind said Madden's professional experiences will help in her new assignment. "She has an in depth knowledge of budgeting, and she has done graduate work in economic development that will hopefully enable her to serve as a resource to the Ketchikan community." Madden, who speaks Japanese and has studied in Japan, has worked in Ketchikan. She helped establish a K-12 curriculum that included a Japan and Pacific Rim emphasis. Most recently, Madden has worked as a consultant on a comprehensive study of the University of Alaska extended sites that was requested by the board of regents. Prior to that she conducted a survey of all vocational education programs of the university. "Both of these projects relate directly to the Ketchikan campus and will help Dr. Madden as she begins her responsibilities as director," Lind said. Madden is currently president of Madden Associates in Juneau. Other recent positions include provost of Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, 1994-96; assistant director of the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education, 1992-94; senior policy/budget analyst, Office of the Governor, 1989-92; adjunct professor in economics and public administration at UAS Juneau 1989 to present. She also worked for a decade as a division director and special assistant to the commissioner in the Alaska Department of Education. Madden earned her Ph. D. from The American University in Washington D.C. in 1990. Her area of study was Alaska economic development and economic history. One of her master's degrees is in Japanese studies/economics from Johns Hopkins University and the other is in education from UAS. She also studied for two years at Sophia University in Tokyo. Beginning this fall a search will be conducted for a permanent Ketchikan campus director. The initial search this spring was halted when the top choice, Nicolas Piccolo of Caldwell, Idaho, withdrew his application.
