July
30, 1998 More than 130 professional papers on education will be presented during the 52nd annual conference of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA) to be held on the UAS Juneau campus Aug. 4-8. The educational leaders consider themes related to diversity, social justice and caring. The papers will be presented in eight different small group sessions. Topics include, sexual harassment in schools, teacher attrition, graduate courses on the Internet, multicultural education, women in leadership, restructuring schools for the information age and many more. In addition a resource fair will be held each day at Egan Library. Dr. Lawrence Lee Oldaker, UAS professor and chair of the education faculty, is coordinating the conference. "Former NCPEA Executive Director Don McCarty, after spending two days at the 1994 conference in Palm Desert's scorching heat, suggested that UAS would be a most suitable location for a future convention and invited us to submit a proposal," Oldaker said. "Once our university, education, civic and business community representatives drafted plans for an Auke Lake meeting, a site selection committee and the board of directors enthusiastically endorsed plans to go 'North to Alaska in 1998.' Excited member-delegates provided a standing ovation when the UAS bid was announced in a general session." About 250 participants and their families are expected to attend the conference. They have filled all the space in UAS student housing. While members attend the conference a series of activities have been planned for family members. They include cruises, golf, sailing, hiking and helicopter tours. Oldaker submitted a bid from UAS to the national group two years ago. "At one time there were officials from nine other university and convention sites seeking to have the 1998 conference," Oldaker said. "Forceful presentations by Carolyn Holbert of the Juneau Convention and Visitors Bureau and Timi Hough of UAS housing at subsequent NCPEA meetings strengthened everyone's resolve in planning to attend the highly-regarded national convention in Juneau. " "We are aware of important contributions by NCPEA members in preparing school principals, superintendents, and professors for professional service in the nation's education systems," Oldaker said. "It is a pronounced honor for the UAS community to host this large gathering of educational leaders; this landmark event is a first for Juneau and the State of Alaska."
