October
14, 1998 A new Construction Jobs Training class begins Monday at UAS. Registration is still available. Students will build a community project while attending classes Monday through Friday for nearly two months. "Most students completing the class find work in construction," according to Gary Bowen, associate dean. One of those was 52 year old Ben Jackson Sr. of Juneau. He took the class last spring after working 25 years as a heavy equipment operator in jobs that took him away from home. "I got a call about the class and jumped right in," Jackson, who wanted to be near his family, said. A week after completing the class, where students built a maintenance shed for the city, Jackson was hired for a local construction job. His son, Ben Jr. begins the training class on Monday. "The coursework is as close to real-life employment as you can get," Bowen said. "Students will get their hands dirty and learn some very valuable skills." In additions students receive a tool package, eight hours of university credits, and job placement assistance. For information or to register for the Construction Jobs Training class (CT 193L) call UAS. -30-
