10, 1998 UAS Sitka Campus Director Elaine Sunde has announced her resignation effective in January. "My reasons are both personal and professional," Sunde said. On the personal side Sunde said her husband has recently retired and is "ready to play." Professionally, she said, "I feel satisfied with what the campus has accomplished and with its strong future. I could continue doing 'what I do' but believe every organization periodically should have new leadership to blaze new trails." UAS Chancellor Marshall Lind praised Sunde's work and accomplishments. " We are sorry Elaine is leaving as Sitka campus director, but we hope to continue to use her expertise and skills on special university projects in the future." This semester Sunde accepted a special assignment for the chancellor and U.A. President Mark Hamilton to design a statewide outreach program. The first phase of that project is now complete. Sunde said as the specifics of the outreach program are developed she may again be involved in the project. Chancellor Lind has appointed assistant campus director Kathie Etulain as acting director while a national search for a new director is conducted. "We hope to have a search committee in place in the next couple of weeks," Lind said. "I have no doubt," Sunde said, "that both this campus and this community will attract many highly qualified candidates." "Elaine has helped develop UAS Sitka into a statewide model of excellence for extended campuses," Lind said. "She has been innovative and creative while implementing large projects and equally effective while managing the day to day responsibilities of a campus director. Throughout her tenure, Elaine has demonstrated outstanding leadership to her community, her campus, and her state." Lind also praised Sunde for her leadership in another area. "Elaine has helped create a distance education program that is recognized around the country. As the result of her initiatives and successes, students across the state are able to receive quality education and job training without having to leave their communities." Between now and January, Sunde will work on campus projects including completing the final report on the 3-year Native student retention program, finishing annual evaluations, preparing for the transition to a new director, and helping with on-going campus projects. Sunde came to the UAS Sitka campus as a faculty member in 1988. She served as assistant director from 1989 to 1991 when she was appointed director.
