November
16, 1998 The first solo art show of works by a UAS student who studied overseas is now open on the lower level of Egan Library. UAS senior Mark Duran spent last year as an international exchange student studying at an art institute in The Netherlands. His public show continues through November 26. "It's the first time we've done a show with one of our returning students from foreign studies," UAS art faculty member George Parker said. "Mark was an excellent student when he went away for his year. I've had a chance to review what he did, and he came back with some really fine things." The show, with about two dozen pieces, features different facets of Duran's year of overseas study. Printed information near the works explain some of the background. Duran describes the show as, "Figures, drawings, paintings of spaces, and experimental art forms." Duran's experimental work involved use of microscopes, a computer and a video camera. "I made oil representations of what was on the video camera," Duran said. Duran will graduate from UAS in December with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree. Parker said this show is important for Duran. "Obviously it can go on his resume, it's confidence building, and he'll get feedback. It's a big step because it takes a lot of confidence to step forward and it's a lot of work." -30-
