December
16, 1998 A 43 year old, single, part-time UAS student won a $1,200 scholarship in the "Get Smart" promotion. "I wasn't sure I was going to be able to continue school next semester," winner Jeff Haas said. "Now it's going to happen. Thank you very much." The "Get Smart" promotion was open to all and sponsored by Juneau businesses Residential Mortgage, Vintage Park and KINY radio. Participants faxed their name, phone and the words "Get Smart" to KINY to take part in the final drawing. Haas' name was drawn from all the entries and announced at the Chancellor's Holiday Reception Wednesday afternoon on the UAS campus. Haas, who worked last summer on the Alaska Marine Highway System, said he doesn't usually enter contests, but he heard about this one and "something got me to enter." After winning the $1,200 scholarship Haas plans to enroll as a full-time UAS student spring semester. "This is like heaven sent. It's not a big miracle, but it's a miracle. It couldn't have come at a better time." Beth Galea, Juneau branch manager of Residential Mortgage said the "Get Smart" promotion occurred because the company believes in giving back to the community. "Education is a tool by which people can improve themselves and change their lives," Galea said. "I believe in education personally and so does Residential Mortgage." Residential Mortgage opened their headquarters office in Anchorage on August 1 and their Juneau office on September 15. A similar "Get Smart" promotion was also conducted by Residential Mortgage with the University of Alaska Anchorage.
