UAS KETKCHIKAN CAMPUS DIRECTOR APPOINTED An experienced educator from Montana has been appointed director of the University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan campus. Russell Poppen currently serves as director of the Lincoln County Campus of Flathead Valley Community College in Libby, Montana. "IÍve very excited. IÍm walking on air," Poppen said of his appointment by UAS Chancellor Marshall Lind. After a national search, Poppen was one of three finalists invited to meet with university and community members in both Ketchikan and Juneau. He will begin his new position in mid May. The Ketchikan Campus Advisory Council recommended Poppen for the appointment. Phyllis Yetka, who chairs the Council, said, "IÍm pleased Russ has accepted the position. I think heÍll be a good fit for the community. I feel very comfortable heÍll follow the directions the campus is going." She also praised PoppenÍs cooperative work with the Libby High School and said, "We want to see that happen in Ketchikan with our high school." Poppen called Ketchikan, "A real jewel. A real benefit to the people of Southeast. We live in an age of life-long learning. Having an institution like UAS Ketchikan is a real guarantee of economic development, social development, and community development." Lind said, "Russ Poppen brings a strong background to his important new post. He has extensive education and administrative experience including serving as a campus director plus managing grants, career counseling, student employment and educational assistance programs. Russ has also worked well with his local high school and has experience in a community facing economic change. I look forward to RussÍ leadership and contributions to the Ketchikan campus and the University of Alaska Southeast." Poppen will replace Dr. Mary Lou Madden of Juneau who has served as interim campus director for the past year. She was appointed following the resignation of Fran Feinerman who accepted the presidency of Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming in June, 1998. Since 1997, Poppen has served as director for the Lincoln County Campus in Libby, Montana and is responsible to the president of Flathead Community College. He was director of Casper College Career Information Center from 1990-1997; director of the Casper College Student Employment Program from 1990 to the present; supervisor of programs dealing with tutoring, single parents, gender equity and disabilities from 1990-1995; and has worked as a grants manager and grants contractor. Poppen has partially completed his doctoral studies in Adult Leadership at Montana State University (MSU) at Bozeman. He has a Masters of Education in Counseling and Human Development from MSU. Poppen has been active in the community of Libby, serving as president of the Economic Development Council, various non-profit agency boards, an outreach program to the local jail, and as a volunteer for youth programs.
