12, 1999 A total of $1,700 in prizes will be awarded to the winning short story and poetry entries by "Exploration Í99," the University of Alaska Southeast literary magazine now in its 18th year of publication. Submissions must be postmarked by May 15, 1999. A special category has been introduced this year for Alaska Native writers whose work focuses on Alaska Native themes. A $100 award will be made for the winning short story, poem, or translation of a traditional story in this category. Entries in this category will also be considered for the larger prizes. "Exploration" guidelines are available by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to UAS Explorations, Editor Art Petersen, 11120 Glacier Highway, Juneau, AK 99801 or by leaving a name and mailing address at (907) 465-6418 or jfamp@uas.alaska.edu The editor regrets not being able to return telephone calls. Sending for guidelines is recommended. The writing contest is open to anyone. Entries will be ïblind juried" by an editorial board and this yearÍs judge, poet and linguist Richard Dauenhauer. A maximum of five poems may be submitted with a limit of 60 lines each. A maximum of two short stories may be submitted with a maximum of 3,000 words each. On the back of each first page of each submission should be the authorÍs name, address and two or three lines of biography. The reader/entry fee is $6 for one or two poems and $3 per poem for three to five poems. There is a $6 reader/entry fee for each short story submission. Checks should be made out to "UAS Explorations." All who submit entries will receive a copy of "Explorations." Submissions cannot be returned. The first place prize for a poem or short story is $1,000. Second place for a short story or poem (other than the genre winning 1st place) is $500. Third place for poetry is $100 and third place for short fiction is $100.
