22, 1999 "Critical Issues in Society and Technology" is the topic for a weekly series of free, public presentations Thursday evenings in the Lake Room on the UAS campus. "They are issues that will impact everybody in every walk of life," according to the series coordinator Jason Ohler, an associate professor of education at the University of Alaska Southeast. "They are working their way into our lives without our really knowing it. They are technologies that have the potential to change everything." The topic for Thursday, Feb. 25, is "The Impact of Digital Technology on the Way We Work and Do Business." It will be presented by financial consultant Robert Tonkin and will include discussion of E cash, telecommunting, doing business on the Internet and the impact on community. This ThursdayÍs presentation begins at 5 p.m. The remaining Thursday meetings will begin at 6 p.m. Topics during the remainder of the series will include Digital Democracy, the Ethics of Genetic Engineering, the Impact of Television on Rural Alaska, Y2K, Freedom of Speech and ChildrenÍs Access to Material on the Internet, the Future of the Digital Economy, Computers and Privacy, and Digital Forgery.
