6, 1999 Dr. Mary Lou Madden of Juneau has been appointed interim dean of faculty at the University of Alaska Southeast. She replaces John Pugh who has been appointed UAS chancellor. Madden begins her new position on August 15. A national search for a permanent dean will begin in August. Madden has an extensive background in education and for the past year has served as interim director of the UAS Ketchikan campus. "Mary Lou has an excellent management background and a broad range of experiences," Pugh said. "She has already demonstrated strong leadership skills in Ketchikan, and I am pleased to have her assume the position of interim dean of faculty at the University of Alaska Southeast." The dean of faculty is responsible for the day-to-day operations of UAS's academic, vocational, and community services programs including coordination of the class offerings on all three UAS campuses in Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan. Madden has served as provost of Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, assistant director of the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education, senior policy/budget analyst in the Office of the Governor, and adjunct professor in economics and public administration at UAS. Madden also worked for a decade as a division director and special assistant to the commissioner of the Alaska Department of Education. Madden earned her Ph. D. from The American University in Washington, D.C. Her area of study was Alaska economic development and economic history. One of her master's degrees is in Japanese studies/economics from Johns Hopkins University and the other is in education from UAS. She also studied for two years at Sophia University in Tokyo. -30-
