GRADUATION CEREMONIES FOR TEACHERS SATURDAY AT UAS

Graduation ceremonies for 34 future teachers who have completed their Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree at the University of Alaska Southeast will be held Saturday (June 26) at 10 a.m. in Egan Library. The last day of class is today (Friday June 25).

"We honor these students at a different time than our regular commencement," according to Dean of Faculty John Pugh, " because they donÍt finish their classes until later."

This is the first graduating class for the elementary MAT program and the fifth class of the secondary MAT.

The graduation speaker is Jim Johnsen, chief of staff to University of Alaska President Mark Hamilton. Student speakers will be Dirk Miller in elementary education and Lillian Brown in the secondary program.

Both the elementary and secondary program run for a full year. Students study on campus in the first summer, work as interns in public schools and take graduate classes during fall and spring, and complete the program on campus during a second summer.

"This is a year out of their life," Pugh said. "ItÍs a very intense program. WeÍre talking about individuals working in the classroom four days a week and then taking 9-12 graduate credits. ItÍs a seven day-a-week, 12-15 hour-a-day job."

Pugh said the students get an excellent introduction to the public school system while spending a year in the classroom as an intern. "WeÍve had a real good placement rate," Pugh said, "because these teachers are well prepared."

New classes for both MAT programs begin Monday (June 28). Seventeen students will begin the secondary and 15 will begin elementary. For the first time, some secondary MAT students will be placed in Ketchikan and Haines. Most of the secondary students intern in Juneau and Sitka. All of the elementary students intern in Juneau. Dr. Dave Marvel coordinates the secondary program and Dr. Mary-Claire Tarlow coordinates the elementary program.
