Outdoor theater presented at UAS

A new, outdoor theater space at the University of Alaska Southeast will be inaugurated with a free preview Monday night. Prospero and the Killer Whales will be performed by Theatre in the Rough at 7:30 p.m. above the UAS parking lot on the Auke Lake campus. The production is supported by the Bread Loaf School of English in collaboration with UAS.

Additional performances will be held Aug. 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14. Tickets are available at Hearthside Books or at the door. They are $12 for adults and $5 for children.

The play by David Hunsaker is a combination of ShakespeareÍs Tempest and the Tlingit killer whale story. "Dave has done a fabulous job reworking two familiar legends," according to Barry Press, a Bread Loaf faculty member.

Aaron Elmore of Theatre in the Rough says the outdoor performance area was inspired by ShakespeareÍs Globe Theatre. It is set in a round clearing of trees above the UAS parking lot. "This magical open air space will be lit by fire light and will be covered in case of rain," Elmore said.

Theatre in the Rough performers are Elmore, Katie Jensen, and Lonna Stevens.
