4, 1999 University of Alaska Southeast Chancellor John Pugh has appointed Dr. John Carnegie director of the Sitka campus. Carnegie has been serving as interim director since July. "John Carnegie has proven through his on-the-job experience as interim director that he has all the skills to effectively lead the UAS Sitka campus as director," Pugh said. "John has a wonderful combination of management and personnel skills combined with experience, vision, and good humor. In addition, John has practical experience with distance education and will continue the Sitka campusÍs leadership in this expanding area of higher education." Carnegie accepted a position at the UAS Sitka campus as associate professor of Environmental Technology in 1995. He was project director of the National Science FoundationÍs Rural Alaska Sanitation Education grant and director for the Alaska Small Public Water System Training/Technical Assistance Center. He also developed the new certificate and Associate of Applied Science degree in Environmental Technology for the UAS Sitka campus. In 1998, Carnegie became director of the Alaska Water Training/Technology Assistance Center on the Sitka campus, one of five such centers established nationally by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Carnegie said, "IÍm honored to be appointed. Serving as Sitka campus director is an opportunity to have a broader impact and bring some of my ideas of management and service to our campus community. That includes those we serve and those who work here." Carnegie plans to emphasize several issues. "The Sitka campus will continue to play a leadership role in the distance delivery of courses," he said. "We will also continue to serve the UAS outreach communities in Southeast as we have in the past." Carnegie said he is also interested in working with secondary schools to develop programs, such as dual enrollment, that can help high school students. Carnegie has a Ph.D. from Oregon State University. From 1975 to 1977 he was department chair and instructor at Kenai Peninsula Community College. From 1977-1995 Carnegie served as department chair for Engineering Technology at Linn-Benton Community College in Oregon.
