1999 University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan campus director Russ Poppen submitted his resignation for health reasons yesterday. UAS Chancellor John Pugh named the Ketchikan campusÍ senior faculty member, Dr. Priscilla Schulte as acting director. She will assume her new duties immediately. In his resignation letter, Poppen said, "I have experienced a number of health problems that I had not experienced previously. In light of these on going problems, I believe it is in the best interest to relocate to an environment more conducive to my health." A search for a permanent director will begin in the spring. "We will be looking first in Alaska," Pugh said of the search process. ""We will do a very extensive search in the university system and within Alaska communities to see if we can find an Alaskan who knows Alaska employment needs, the Alaska educational needs, and the issues in Alaska." Applications will be accepted from outside the state, but Pugh said, "We hope they will have the kinds of experience that relates to Alaska. Pugh named Schulte acting director after meeting with campus faculty and staff as well as members of the Ketchikan Community Advisory Committee. Schulte began teaching on the UAS Ketchikan campus in 1980 and is the senior faculty member. She is a professor of anthropology and sociology. Schulte received her Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico and her MasterÍs and BachelorÍs degrees from the University of Connecticut. She has also taught at colleges on the Navajo Reservation prior to moving to Ketchikan. Poppen began as campus director in May. He had worked as director of the Lincoln County campus of Flathead Valley Community College in Libby, Montana. -30-
