UAS Writing Students Win State Competition UAS freshman earned a near-sweep of the top four awards in a statewide writing contest open to all University of Alaska students taking English 111, the freshman composition course. Kele Goodwin won first place in the Archie Shiels Freshman Compostion Contest for "I Love Trees." Honorable mention when to Neville Jo Leijonflycht for "Compassion and Nature as Family," and Jeff Donaldson for "Waking Up To a Memory." The runner-up award went to Marlaina Thiel of Kenai Peninsula College. "Frequently at the freshman level, student aren't convinced their writing is worthy," according to UAS Assistant Professor of English Judy Andree. "This is a good way to give that encouragement." The contest, judged by University of Alaska Fairbanks English faculty, was founded in 1935 by Archie Shiels who was an avid collector of Alaska historical materials. -30-
