UAS LITERARY MAGAZINE CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS

A total of $1,700 in prizes will be awarded to the winning short story and poetry entries by "Explorations 2000" the University of Alaska Southeast literary magazine now in its 19th year of publication. Submissions must be postmarked by May 15, 2000.

First place in poetry or short fiction wins $1000. Second place in the other genre wins $500. There are $100 awards for third place in each genre. There is also a $100 award for a short story, poem or translation of a tradition story to the winning Alaska Native writer who focuses on Alaska Native themes.

"Explorations" guidelines are available by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to UAS Explorations, Editor Art Petersen, 11120 Glacier Highway, Juneau, AK 99801 or by leaving a name and mailing address at (907) 465-6418 or jfamp@uas.alaska.edu The editor is not able to return telephone calls. Sending for guidelines is recommended.

The writing contest is open to anyone. Entries are "blind juried" by an editorial board and this yearÍs judge, Dr. Art Petersen, professor of English at the University of Alaska Southeast and a co-founding editor of the magazine in 1981.

A maximum of seven poems may be submitted with a limit of 60 lines each. A maximum of two short stories up to 3,000 words each may be submitted. On the back of each first page of each submission should be the authorÍs name, address and two or three lines of biography. The reader/entry fee is $6 for one or two poems and $3 per poem for three to five poems. There is a $6 reader/entry fee for each short story submission. Checks are to be made out to "UAS Explorations."

All who submit entries will receive a copy of "Explorations." Submissions cannot be returned.
