SKIING DENALI SLIDE SHOW AT UAS THURSDAY (Nov. 16) In June, UAS philosophy professor Kevin Krein summitted 20,320 foot Denali and then skied more than 13,000 vertical feet to base camp. He will present a slide show on the big screen at the UAS Student Activity Center at 7 p.m. Thursday. Krein and three companions flew to their base camp on June 1. Twenty-four days later Krein stood on the summit where he strapped on his skis and began the decent. "Right off the summit wasn't particularly difficult," Krein said. "It was cold and because of the height oxygen is a factor, but the snow was pretty good." After pushing across a large flat area beneath North America's highest mountain, Krein came to the headwall. "It's steep and fairly intimidating," he said. Others declined to ski down, but Krein said the headwall went well once he got started. He spent the night at 14,000 and then completed the ski to base camp the next day, with a 60 pound pack. Krein said his slide show would "explain what we did, how we made our decisions and tell the story of the trip." -30-
