"Become a Teacher" Informational Meeting Monday at UAS

Those interested in becoming a teacher may attend an informational meeting Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Mourant Building on the University of Alaska Southeast campus.

UAS offers a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree. "It's pretty unique," Dr. Dave Marvel says, "in that people who want to become elementary or secondary teachers can do so in one year."

Students in the MAT program begin in June of one year and complete the program in June of the next year. "One of the main strengths of the program is that our students spend nine months in a public school with a master teacher. We think if produces wonderful new teachers." Marvel said.

Marvel, who directs the secondary MAT program and Dr. Mary-Claire Tarlow, who directs the elementary MAT program, will describe the courses and answer questions at Monday's informational meeting.
