Banff Mountain Film Festival Feb. 17 Big wall climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, paragliding and other subjects will be featured at the Banff Mountain Film Festival at 7 p.m. in Centennial Hall on February 17. Tickets are being sold only at the door. They are $10 general admission and $6 for UAS students with ID. "These are high adrenaline movies that fit the interests and passions of many in Juneau," according to UAS Activity Director Tish Griffin. "We sold out the last two years and had to bring in extra chairs." UAS sponsors the film festival each year as part of campus Winterfest activities. The films are the best from the 25th Anniversary of the Banff Mountain Film Festival held in November. This year the festival received 213 entries representing 24 countries. Each year, a pre-screening committee selects 30 to 40 finalists. An international jury then determines the best films and awards prizes in eight categories. The best films from the festival go on a world tour. Last year over 84,000 people attended 209 screenings in 150 cities, including Juneau. The first Banff Mountain Film Festival was held in 1976 and about 450 people attended. Last year almost 8,000 attended. "February seems like a time when many Juneau residents are thinking about or planning adventures of their own," Griffin said. "The Banff films are a great way to find inspiration and to start dreaming." -30-
