UAS Offers Month of Activities to Celebrate Women's
History
Poet
and musician Joy Harjo appears March 2 to kick off the first of nearly
20 different events for Women's History month on the University of
Alaska Southeast campus. Harjo has written six books of poetry and
is a member of Poetic Justice, a band that combines music with poetry.
Harjo's poetry reading/lecture is at 7 p.m. in Egan Library.
All the
Women's History Month events are open to the public. They include:
- March
5: "From the Radical Reformation to Radical Feminism: Women
in Religion in America," by Michael Price, noon, UAS's Mourant
Building.
- March
7: "A Celebration of Women Writers," by Dr. Alexis Easley,
noon, Mourant Building.
- March
8: Women's lunch discount in Mourant Cafe.
- March
8: International Women's Day Celebration, 4:30 -6:30 p.m. Silverbow.
- March
19: Women's Health Forum, noon, Mourant Building.
- March
21: "Women and Technology - The Basics and Beyond," noon,
Mourant Building.
- March
22: "Men's Perspectives on the Women's Movement," noon,
Mourant Building.
- March
23: "The Devil's Gateway: A History of Women and Christianity," noon,
Mourant Building
- March
23: "Women, Religion, and Spirituality: Another Look," 1:30
p.m. Lake Room.
- March
23: "Breaking Ground in the Wilderness: Mary Baker Eddy, Pioneer
in Spiritual Discovery," lecture by Joni Overton-Jung, 7 p.m.
Egan Library
- March
24: Cindy Pearson folk concert followed by a women's poetry slam,
7 p.m., UAS Student Activity Center.
- March
26: "Women and Politics: Barriers and Opportunities in the 21st
Century," 3 p.m. Mourant Building.
- March
29: Native women storytellers, noon, Mourant Building
- March
30: "Redefinition of Identity: Asian Women and the Arts," lecture
by Magdalen Hsu-Li, 2:30 p.m. Mourant Building.
