Applications for Free High School Leadership Institute Due April 2

Southeast high school juniors and seniors may apply for the free College Bound Student Leadership Institute to be held on the University of Alaska Southeast Juneau campus June 3 -15. Applications are due April 2. For information or an application packet call UAS toll free at 1-877-465-4827.

"This is an opportunity for high school students to experience college life as well as gain valuable skills to help in the development of their leadership styles," according to Timi Tullis, one of the UAS Institute coordinators.

Students selected for the Institute will receive free transportation from their homes to and from Juneau. In addition campus housing and food will be provided. Institute funding is provided by a three-year grant from First National Bank.

"This is a great deal for students," Tullis said. "I wish something like this had been available when I was in high school."

The primary criterion for selection is an interest in leadership. Some preference will be given to students from low-income communities or families.

Participants at the June Institute will take part in events such as team building, leadership skills, time management, diversity, job shadowing, conducting meetings, volunteering, critical thinking and more.

Plans to attend college are not a criteria. However Tullis said, "Typically we see student leaders are people who choose the next stop which is college. We'd like to help prepare them for what they can expect at a university."

Student Leadership Institute participants will be taught and supervised by UAS faculty and staff. They will also receive two college credits for taking part.
