March
19, 2001 A ground-breaking ceremony for the new $8 million University of Alaska Southeast classroom addition will be held at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday (March 21) on the Auke Lake campus. "The classroom addition is a very important part of our core facilities," according to UAS Chancellor John Pugh. "We have been using temporary classrooms for over 15 years." During the same time, Pugh said, the number of full-time students has increased 100 percent. "It is really important for us to have additional classroom space if we're going to continue to grow. This enables us to go to that next level." The 22,000 square foot facility will include 16 new classrooms on two floors. They will range in size from seminar rooms to a 154-seat lecture hall. The classrooms will be wired for distance delivery classes. The addition will connect to the present entrance of Egan Library and extend to the bus turnaround. It will have the same style and appearance as Egan Library. The last legislature approved $5.5 million for the classroom project. An additional $2.5 million is needed to complete the second phase. Coogan Construction of Juneau was awarded a $3 million contract to build the first phase, and it is scheduled to be completed by December 20. Jensen Yorba Lott Inc. of Juneau are the project architects. "This is a relatively large project for Juneau," according to Keith Gerken, director of UAS Facilities Services. "It is $8 million total in two phases. There's a local contractor and a local design firm. There will be subcontractors hiring locally. So there is a fair economic impact of doing a project like this in the community." -30-
