April 27,
2001 Paul Kraft, who is completing his PhD at Montana State University in Bozeman, has been hired as the new Dean of Students and Enrollment Management at the University of Alaska Southeast. He replaces Bruce Gifford who resigned after 13 years to accept a university position in Idaho. "Paul has a wonderful blend of education, experience, enthusiasm and personality," Chancellor John Pugh said. "During his on-campus interviews, he impressed us with his openness, sincerity, communications skills and determination to be involved in student activities. Paul has a strong student services background, plus experience in strategic planning, budget oversight and teaching enrollment management courses. I'm pleased Paul Kraft is joining the UAS team." As dean of Student Services and Enrollment Management, Kraft will be responsible for the services provided for students outside the classroom. "The reason any of us are on campus is because of the students," he said. "One of my passions is to create as good an experience for students as possible. I want to remove any roadblocks that get in the way of students getting a good education and moving toward graduation." From 1997 - 1999 Kraft served as interim vice president for Student Affairs at Northern State University (NSU) in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He supervised the campus offices of Residence Life, Counseling and Career Development, Minority Achievement, Testing Services, International Student Services, and Disability Services. From 1992 - 1997, Kraft was director of Counseling and Career Development at NSU with responsibility for counseling, health, tutoring, career and placement services. Kraft is presently working as assistant to the dean of the College of Engineering at Montana State University. His PhD topic is in the area of enrollment management. "As a family, we have been lovers of the outdoors," Kraft said. "When the UAS position became available, we thought this would be an ideal fit." Kraft said during his campus visit he talked to many faculty and staff. "We really got a good sense that UAS is a place where people enjoyed being, and we wanted to be part of that." Kraft begins his new job in July. He will be accompanied by his wife, who is completing her masters degree and is a middle school teacher, and their 15-year-old son. -30-
