June 1, 2001 More than a dozen high school students will be on the University of Alaska Southeast campus June 3 - 15 for the first College Bound Student Leadership Institute. "We're focusing on skills of good leaders, team building, good communications," according to Timi Tullis, one of the campus organizers. The Institute is funded by a three-year grant from First
National Bank and is coordinated by UAS. The grant pays expenses for
the students selected. "This is a great opportunity to experience what it's like to be a college student," according to Tullis. "and to also gain a lot of personal knowledge and growth." The students will live in UAS student housing and eat in the Mourant Cafe. In addition to learning leadership skills, Tullis said, there would be an opportunity for practical experiences by doing volunteer work and job shadowing during the second week of the Institute. "I think this is an incredible opportunity," Tullis said. "I had opportunities to go to things like this when I was in high school, and it literally change my direction in life." Tullis said she hopes some of the students will enroll at UAS, or another college, when they graduate from high school. "They can continue to use their leadership skills and maybe always remember the favorable experience they had on the UAS campus this summer and developing new friendships." -30-
