June 1, 2001 Applications are being accepted for the Information Technology Program at the University of Alaska Southeast for fall semester. Graduates from the program will be prepared for work in information technology, networking, and as computer technicians. "This program is designed for anyone interested in getting into the technology field," according to Associate Professor Sharon Crostick. "Students will experience the solid Cisco certification curriculum and have the use of a laptop for the first year." Cisco has been a national leader in crafting training and certification programs for those interested in starting information technology careers. Crostick also said, "A real strength of the program is that students work together on everything from writing technical documents to running cable. That's important because increasingly businesses say they want employees with strong interpersonal skills." Many of the current IT students entered because they wanted a career change. "I have years of experience in the business world," Shari Jensen said. "With the ever changing computer technology, this is one of the best things I could have done at this point in my life." David Hutchins came from a database programming background and entered the program to learn web publishing. "I'm talking to a lot of friends I still have in industry, and they're agreeing with all the classes I'm getting," Hutchins said. Students enroll full-time at UAS. After three semesters they earn a certificate and after two more semesters they earn a Cisco certificate and an Associate of Applied Science degree. The program also includes a paid summer internship. "I think it's a really good idea that we have the internship," Valleri Collins said, "so that we have some real world experience to put with our book learning."
