June 8, 2001 The University of Alaska Southeast will begin offering a new Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education degree this fall. The Board of Regents Friday (June 8) authorized the new degree plus a new certificate in Outdoor Leadership that also begins this fall. "There's a shortage of teachers in Alaska," UAS Chancellor John Pugh said. "This will enable us to recruit students right out of high school and get them interested in being teachers. This will be an outstanding program to prepare them for that profession." The undergraduate degree program in Elementary Education will lead to an Alaska Type A certification. Students, who will take 127-128 credits, will be assessed relative to national and state standards. The degree also features a year-long internship, strong content preparation and the integration of technology. "Outdoor Leadership is going to be great for students interested in working in the tourist industry, who are doing trekking, or other kinds of outdoor activities," according to Pugh. The 30-credit program will combine skill training, leadership development and liberal arts. Students will receive intensive training in outdoor activities with a heavy emphasis on personal and group safety, planning and team building. Courses in rock and ice climbing, hiking, sea kayaking, etc. will be taught by recognized experts. -30-
