7, 2001 Juneau artist Rie Muñoz is helping the University of Alaska Southeast Noyes Pavilion project by donating 100 prints of a recent watercolor painting entitled, "Ice Skating - Juneau." The matted print will be given as a thank you to those donating $1,000 or more to the Noyes Pavilion campaign. "This is a tremendous gesture of support," UAS Chancellor John Pugh said. "The pavilion is being funded entirely through private donations so a commemorative gift by such a renowned local artist fits very well with the local nature of the pavilion." Muñoz began painting Alaska "vignettes" soon after arriving in Juneau in 1950. Her work has been widely shown and honored. She was awarded a Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from UAS in 1999. In 2000 she was named Artist of the Year at the Pacific Rim Art Exhibition in Seattle. Muñoz' son, Juan said, "When Chancellor Pugh asked Rie if she could draw a Juneau scene somewhere near the campus that could be used for fund-raising purposes for the Noyes Pavilion, she was more than happy to participate." Juan manages the Rie Muñoz Gallery. He said, "Rie thinks it's going to be darn fun to have that pavilion out there. It will be a great asset to the community." The pavilion will be used by both the campus and community for performances and presentations. The open-air, but covered, facility to be built in the trees above the UAS parking lots will cost about $525,000. To date $290,000 has been raised, including $110,000 from the John and Lily Noyes family. John Noyes was Alaska Adjutant General when he was killed in plane crash near Nome in 1956. Co-chairs of the Noyes Pavilion fund-raising campaign are Laraine Derr, Katie Corbus and Gordon Evans. Anyone with questions about contributions may contact UAS Development Director Lynne Johnson at 465-6461. -30-
