ANNUAL CALL FOR POETRY AND SHORT FICTION BY UAS LITERARY MAGAZINE

A total of $2,200 in awards will be made to the winning short story and poetry entries by "Explorations 2002," the University of Alaska Southeast literary magazine now in its 22nd year of publication. Submissions must be postmarked by May 15, 2002.

First place in poetry or short fiction carries an award of $1000. The award for second place in another genre is $500. There are $100 awards for third place in each genre. Also awarded will be $500 for a short story, poem or translation of a traditional story by an Alaska Native writer who focuses on Alaska Native themes.

" Explorations" guidelines are available by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to UAS Explorations, Editor Art Petersen, 11120 Glacier Highway, Juneau, AK 99801, requesting by e-mail: art.petersen@uas.alaska.edu or on the "Explorations" website: www.geocities.com/artpetersen

The editor is not able to return telephone calls. Checking guidelines is recommended. Submissions are accepted from all poets and writers. Entries are "blind juried" by an editorial board. Previously published material is not eligible.

Poems are limited to 60 lines each, and stories are limited to 3,000 words each. On the back of each first page of each submission should be the author's name, address and two or three lines of biography. The reader/entry fee is $6 for one or two poems and $3 for each additional poem. The fee for each short story is $6. Checks should be made out to "UAS Explorations."

All who submit entries receive a copy of "Explorations." Submissions cannot be returned.
