13, 2003 A driver of economic development in the region, the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) has officially reopened admissions to its MBA Program. The program was modified to reflect current available technology as well as the State’s needs for a practical, relevant, and accessible graduate business education. Specifically, 12 existing, three-credit, graduate level (600) business courses will be offered sequentially in a wholly Internet-delivered, seven-week format to an annual cohort of 25 students in fulfillment of the UAS MBA degree requirements. Courses will be punctuated by alternating one- and two-week breaks. Therefore, at the pace of two courses per UAS semester (including summer terms), the degree is a two-year, part-time commitment for students anywhere within the state of Alaska. From a curricular standpoint, the UAS MBA program focuses on a core offering representing the content of a general master of business administration degree. The development of a cohort of students for progression through each program offering is the central design feature of this program rejuvenation. The cohort model has been widely praised for its positive impacts on the learners’ teamwork and lifelong networking. These positive aspects of the graduate cohort experience best fits the educational goals of the UAS MBA program and provides expanded opportunities for collaborative learning, peer interactions, and professional networking. The first cohort of 25 students will begin their studies in early September 2003. Applications to the program are welcome. Please visit www.uas.alaska.edu/mba for more details. September 2003 cohort applicants are encouraged to apply by March 15, 2003. The chief competitive advantage of the revised MBA program for degree candidates, employers, and other key publics is its practical and relevant approach to graduate business education that is accessible via distance delivery to highly qualified residents of the State. The program is practical in that it is performance-based. That is, the degree is designed to inculcate skills, the kind of skills required to actually do business. Another competitive advantage of the redeveloped UAS MBA program would be its unifying framework of making business education the centerpiece of economic development in Alaska, i.e., by incorporating a regular focus on Alaskan business cases, applied business research, and development of viable business plans relevant to Alaskan industries such as wood products, fisheries, logistics, and more. The UAS Business faculty represents an admirable core of disciplinary specialists who are all committed to providing the academic leadership for the MBA. This faculty will instruct at least half of the program. To supplement the faculty resources, UAS has begun to develop a network of highly trained and experienced business academics/practitioners located throughout the world that will serve as part-time faculty. These faculty members will provide unique educational experiences for graduate students both in terms of business knowledge and perspective. The University of Alaska Southeast, with its main campus in Juneau, is a major academic unit of the University of Alaska. -30- For More Information:
