UAS Employee Frank Fisher Dies

Frank Fisher, 59, of Juneau died in his home on Sunday, June 1, 2003. Frank worked at the University of Alaska Southeast delivering the mail for Facilities Services, since 1979. Frank was born on August 10, 1943 in New York and served in the 1st Division of the Marines Corps during the Vietnam War.

Coworkers said Frank was an avid fly fisherman, but that he had many other passions. He loved to cook and would share his favorite recipes with them. He loved to talk about sports and was a fanatic about Notre Dame football. He was also a dedicated reader and book collector. “He read everything from Sci-Fi to the Classics;” his favorite author was Science Fiction writer Tom Godwin. In his will, Frank requested that his book collection, which numbers in the hundreds, with many first editions, be left to the Egan Library at UAS.

“ He touched so many lives,” said one employee. “He’d spend five minutes, twice a day, with just about every department in the University – He left a big hole.”

“He would talk about the things he loved, but he hated to talk about himself,” said his supervisor Becky Fitzpatrick. “And he didn’t do birthdays. One year we sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to him and he gave us the cold shoulder for two weeks.” One story Frank did share was about being on the French Rivera on his 21st birthday. He was on military leave and while the other soldiers visited local saloons, Frank studied the local architecture and visited art museums. He carried those memories very close to his heart.

Many employees used the word ‘intelligence’ when remembering Frank. “He knew everything about the flora and fauna of Southeast Alaska,” said one fishing partner. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking and bird hunting.

A memorial service will be held at the Chapel by the Lake at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, with a reception immediately following at the Lake Room in the UAS Mourant Building.
