UAS Scholarship Recipients

Michael Rolf of Brooking Oregon was awarded a $500 Scholarship from the Juneau-Gastineau Rotary Club. Rolf is a sophomore at University of Alaska Southeast, working toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in power technology with an emphasis in Diesel mechanics. He plans on staying in Alaska after earning his degree.

Ryia Walden of Juneau was awarded a $500 scholarship from Juneau-Gastineau Rotary Club and the Bill & Nell Biggs Scholarship for $1,750. Walden is an incoming freshman at University of Alaska Southeast where she plans to major in General Biology. In her spare time Walden volunteers at the Pioneers’ Home and keeps active playing volleyball and participating in her church’s youth group. Ryia plans to stay in Alaska and become a biology teacher.

Michelle Palmer of Juneau was awarded a $500 scholarship from Juneau-Gastineau Rotary Club and a $1,000 talent grant. Palmer is an incoming freshman at the University of Alaska Southeast where she plans to study art. Palmer volunteers as a Youth Group Leader at Chapel by the Lake and a Sunday school teacher at Douglas Island Bible Church. Michelle plans to become an art therapist and hopes to work with children as they fight serious illness.

Lauren Brooks of Juneau was awarded the $1,750 Vera Carrigan scholarship and a $500 Juneau-Gastineau Rotary Club Scholarship. Brooks is an incoming freshman at the University of Alaska Southeast where she plans to study communications and theater. Brooks said, her passion “lies in the art of the written and spoken word.” Lauren plans to get master’s degree and hopes to build a career in print or broadcast media.
