Grammy Award Winner Kevin Max Coming to Juneau

The University of Alaska Southeast is bringing Grammy award winning musician Kevin Max to Juneau for an unplugged concert and poetry reading in the University’s Lake Room. Max is the member of the Christian rock band dc talk, but is traveling to Juneau to promote his solo project, Stereotype BE and lecture on his poetry.

Max says the title of his new album is illustrative of its goal, which is to help widen the parameters of mainstream music to include music that is inspired by faith. “It’s more of a question record than an answer record; it pushes people to an understanding of what truth is.”

Max wrote or co-wrote every track on the album. “My music is about real, flawed people who mess up, who wear their flaws on their sleeve. Real people asking, is there a God? Will He listen to me?” He calls Stereotype BE a heart record. “I think that by making a record honestly and not making a record worrying about market share or how it’s gonna’ hit this person or that person is how you bring people to seek the truth.”

Max said he really wanted to push himself as an artist with this project. “I think that it’s different than anything out there. I wanted to do a record that pushed music, period.” He says that you can hear his many influences, which include the Beatles and John Lennon, Queen, the Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, Radiohead, Muse and Bjork. He said the Indian overtones are inspired by the collaboration between George Harrison and Ravi Shankar. He calls the resulting sound mature pop.

" I put my heart and soul into this. I think people will hear that. That's all I care about at the end of the day, that I put my best foot forward," says Max. "It's not something I did in a week. I've had this record in mind for years. I'm just happy to step back from dc talk and create an album that is all my influence. Hopefully this music will bring people forward and help them appreciate other kinds of music. Then I've accomplished something."

Max’s is performing a free unplugged performance with Eric Cole and poetry reading at the at the Silverbow’s Backroom Restaurant Friday Oct. 24 from 7 to 9:30 pm. Max will also present “The Craft of Poetry” at the UAS Lake Room at noon on the same day. The Lake Room is located in the Mourant Building next to the Cafeteria. Everyone is welcome.
