UA Students Engage Legislature for Missing Piece of Funding Puzzle
Students
from University of Alaska campuses have converged on the capital again
this year for the 19 th annual UA Student's Legislative Conference.
The students are in Juneau to send the message “Get Connected.” The
“Get Connected” theme has a dual meaning. First, that the 11 Universities
involved in Alaska's Coalition of Student Leaders are coming together
to convey the importance of fully funding higher education. Second,
that as a citizens of Alaska, we must get connected to the State Government
and be active participants in the democratic political process.
The
Coalition of Student Leaders has created a 12-foot tall puzzle of Alaska
and distributed across the state to obtain signatures. The puzzle
symbolizes the interconnected nature of Alaska's Universities and has
the messages “5% Fits” and “Get Connected” positioned around the State
Seal. This weekend the 11 Coalition schools are sending over 60 representatives
to advocate for the University of Alaska and show the unified voice of
students.
The
State Seal is the center puzzle piece and students will be asking Legislators
to sign this piece as a gesture of their support for UA funding. Monday
Feb. 23 at 1 pm after the House and Senate floor sessions end, the University
students have invited the Legislators to meet in front of the Capital
Building to help put the puzzle together. The front of the puzzle
portrays the message and the other carries the signatures.
