My Spirit Raised Its Hands: The Story of Elizabeth Peratrovich & Alaskan Civil Rights is a reenactment of the events leading up to the landmark 1945 Territorial Senate hearing where Elizabeth Peratrovich persuaded the Legislature to pass the Anti-Discrimination Act. The one-woman play is written and will be performed by Tlingit actress Diane Benson, brings viewers directly inside the controversial debate. A veteran of the performance industry for more than 20 years, Benson delivers a superb rendition of Peratrovich’s courageous testimony before the Alaska Territorial Legislation.

She has appeared in productions including the international award-winning animated film Sacagawea, Disney's White Fang, and the recently released Alaska film, Kusah HaaKwaan. In addition she founded Northern Stars, a talent agency that promoted Alaskan talent and advocated for rights and better pay for Alaskans in the industry.

The University of Alaska Southeast is co-sponsoring Benson’s visit; and she will read and discuss her poetry with UAS students on Thursday Feb. 17th 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in Hendrickson Building RM 113.
