UAS Awarded $1.1 Million Student Support Services Grant
University of Alaska Southeast was awarded a $1.1 million Student Support Services grant to help students develop strategies to reach their college goals. The Student Support Services program provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and serves to motivate students toward the successful completion of their post-secondary education. The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants and facilitate the process of transition from one level of higher education to the next.
The grant review board specifically noted the UAS program has an effective plan of operation that includes services and activities in three major emphasis areas: 1) Structured First Year Program; 2) Intensive and Intrusive Academic Advising and Mentoring; and 3) Institutional Transformation in the area of cultural responsiveness.
Most SSS grants are awarded on four-year cycles, but the fifth year was awarded based on the strength of the proposal submitted by Vicki Orazem Vice Provost, charged with Student Success. Only ten percent of recipients nationwide were awarded the fifth year.
Associate Vice President of the University of Alaska System Mike Sfraga congratulated UAS by calling the accomplishment "significant" and that it "underscores an aggressive approach to student success, demonstrates UAS's commitment as a student-centered institution, and strengthens the inherent bond between student services and academic affairs."
