June 6 , 2005 Forest Service Moves Resource Library to University of Alaska Southeast JUNEAU, Alaska. The University of Alaska Southeast and the USDA Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station, announced the creation of a new natural resource collection located in the UAS Egan library. It is the only forestry-oriented library in Alaska. The collection previously was housed at the Forest Service Research Laboratory in Juneau since its creation in 1948 as part of the USFS Alaska Forest Research Center. The center later became part of the Pacific Northwest Research Station (PNW) headquartered in Portland, Ore. "This collection will prove invaluable to our students and faculty, especially in the areas of environmental science and biology," said UAS Chancellor John Pugh. "We are extremely happy to have this resource at UAS, because we understand how important it is to our region. Housing the collection will vastly improve our ability to serve the interests of Alaskan's." Professionals and scientists across the state rely heavily on the library's holdings to provide information to do their work. Tom Quigley, Director for the PNW Research Station, approved moving the library to the UAS. "Libraries are an invaluable repository of knowledge. For over 50 years information has been carefully gathered and cared for and is now available to a broader spectrum of the people living in Alaska," said Quigley. In addition to forestry, the collection includes material on fisheries, wildlife, insects, geology, soils, water, recreation and archeology. The emphasis has been on material from Alaska, Canada, northern Europe and Russia plus material from the higher latitudes in the southern hemisphere (e.g. New Zealand which also has a temperate rain forest). Over 40,000 documents and 175 journal titles are maintained along with an entire group of Forest Service Research Station publications. Also included is a comprehensive bibliography of the world literature on Sitka spruce, according to Sandy Boyce the manager of the Forest Service's Juneau Forestry Sciences Laboratory. Denny Bschor, the Regional Forester overseeing management of Alaska's National Forests added, "having the library remain in Alaska means a valuable resource will continue to be available to benefit the scientists, professionals, professors, students, industry, conservationists, and the general public in Alaska." Juneau Mayor Bruce Botelho describes the University as "an important economic engine for the city, this new addition to the University library will improve the ability of the community to continue to learn more about the environment they live in."
