February, 28, 2006 Dr. Liz Coner will present, This Striking Ornament of Nature: The Native Belle in the Colonial Scene, March 8th at 7 p.m. in the UAS Egan Lecture Hall. Dr. Conor is the UAS featured lecturer at UAS for the International Day of Women. Dr. Conor's lecture will elaborate on the research she began with her book, The Spectacular Modern Woman: Feminine Visibility in the 1920s, to frame it in colonial context. Her presentation explores the Western fascination with Aboriginal women as objects of desire and the mass media’s attempt to make them conform to modern ideals of feminine beauty. Liz Conor earned her PhD in Women's Studies and won the Convocation Prize for Highest Achievement in the School of Humanities at La Trobe University in 1991. She has published widely as a commentator and a community activist, and was editor of Metro and Australian Screen Education magazines in Australia. - 30 - Contacts: |
