UAS Pacific Rim Forum on Energy and Environment Heats Up

The 2006 UAS Pacific Rim Forum begins Thursday, March 30th at 9 a.m. in the UAS Egan Lecture Hall with a welcome by Juneau Mayor Bruce Bethelo. The Forum is an interdisciplinary conference that brings artists and academics together with businesspeople and politicians to discuss the issues that meet at the axis of Energy and the Environment.

The Forum’s first panel brings the Governor’s Chief of Staff Jim Clark together with the Director of UAF’s Geophysical Institute Roger Smith to identify the trends in energy and environment. Other lecturers include:

  • Effects of Climate Change on Coastal Communities of Northern Alaska by Caleb Pungowiyi, President of Inuit Circumpolar Conference
  • Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline by Mike Menge Alaska Department of Natural Resources Commissioner
  • Global Warming: The Greatest Threat by Deborah Williams, Alaska Conservation Solution
  • Climate Change Economics by Peter Larsen, UAA ISER Research Associate
  • Environmental Issues and Human Rights in Asia by David Gordon, Executive Director at Pacific Environment
  • Hydrogen from Global, Large-scale, Stranded Renewables: Panacea? The Transmission Problem by Bill Leighty, Director, The Leighty Foundation
  • Stefan Hakenberg will discuss his original composition; Three Movements on the Energy and the Environment
  • World premiere of Hakenberg's composition by Alexander Tutunov

The forum takes place March 30, 31 in the UAS Egan Lecture Hall and April 1 at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center.
