UAS to Host Alaska's Founding Fathers

The University of Alaska Southeast is commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Alaska Constitutional Convention with a day of events honoring Alaska’s founding fathers. The Creating Alaska events begin at 1 pm Friday, April 21, in the Egan Lecture Hall with a panel discussion comprised of the surviving founders, lead by Alaska Constitutional scholar Gordon Harrison.

Former convention delegates Victor Fischer, George Sundborg, Sr. and Jack B. Coghill join convention economic consultant and temporary Secretary George Rogers and Chief Clerk Katie Hurley in looking at the Constitution as a living document and asking whether it has fulfilled their intensions.

At 3 pm the local delegates from the Conference of Young Alaskans will provide an overview of the meeting that took place in Fairbanks in February and share the inspiring vision that arose from that conference.

At 5 pm a public reception and dedication of the Governor William Egan portrait, donated to UAS from Alaska’s first First Lady Neva Egan, will take place in the Egan Library atrium near Spike’s Café.

At 7 pm The 49th Star; Creating Alaska will be screened in the Egan Lecture Hall.  The one-hour documentary chronicles the story of 55 people who gathered for 75 days in sub-zero temperatures for the Constitutional Convention. The 55 elected delegates represented communities across Alaska. Creativity, compromise and consensus were hallmarks of the Convention and the 49th Star captures it all.
