May 2, 2006 The University of Alaska Southeast Commencement ceremony will be held in the Charles Gamble Jr. - Donald Sperl Recreation facility on the UAS Auke Lake Campus Sunday, May 7 at 2 pm. The ceremony caps off the facility's first full-year of operation. Of the 293 graduates approximately 90 will attend the ceremony to accept their diplomas. "This is the first year we are seeing graduates from some of the degrees we've added over the past few years," Said UAS Chancellor John Pugh. "Social science, English, marine biology, business information systems, pre-nursing qualifications and mathematics are all seeing graduates this year. The new degrees are a key component in the maturation of UAS as an institution, and the growth UAS has seen in recent years." R.T. "Skip" Wallen is this year's commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient. Windfall Fisherman and Gang of Four, the bronze statues of brown bears near the Capitol and at the Gastineau Hatchery, respectively, are probably Wallen's best known works to those who live in Juneau. Wallen's stone lithographs and sculptures, however, are displayed in museums and private collections from Denmark to Jordan and from Russia to the southeastern United States. Skip was one of only two living Alaskan artists included in the landmark New York Kennedy Gallery exhibit, "Alaskan Masters." The public is welcome to attend the ceremony. Free parking is available at the main campus parking lots and Princess Tours has donated a shuttle bus to bring guests to and from the recreation center. - 30 – Contact: Kevin Myers UAS Director Public Relations and Marketing 796-6530 cell 321-2755 |
