March
26, 2007 Controversial poet Robert Bly headlines this year’s UAS Spring Forum on Sustaining Culture, Community and the Environment. The Forum brings business, community, and government leaders, academics, and artists together to examine a single concept. The forum is a free exchange of ideas and information about current research, policies, and local efforts working toward sustainability. The UAS Spring Forum runs all day on March 29, 30 and 31 in the UAS Egan Lecture Hall. The public is invited and there is no cost to attend. The Forum begins this Thursday at 9am in the UAS Egan Lecture Hall with Keynote Speaker Robert Bly and his talk, Sustaining Culture Through Speaking Up, Poetry & Translation. Bly will also end the day’s events at 7:30 pm by presenting an analectic reading drawing from his impressive 40-year body of work. Bly, 80, has authored as many books as he has inspired. In addition to his poetry, Bly is well-known for his activism and anti-war protests. During the Viet Nam era, he purportedly endorsed his National Book Award check to an organization that was trying to stop the war. Bly’s most recent collection of poems follows in that theme: The Insanity of Empire: A Book of Poems Against the Iraq War. Bly is perhaps best known as one of the founders of the Men’s Movement. In his book, Iron John: A Book About Men/ he calls for men to define their own sense of masculinity and to find their place in the world. All Spring Forum panels and lectures will be held in the Egan Lecture Hall. The forum is free and open to the public. The full listing of events can be found on the Humanities Website. -30- Contacts: |
