UAS INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD
About UAS - IRB
The University of Alaska Southeast Institutional Review Board (UAS-IRB) is charged with protecting the rights and welfare of human research subjects in research studies conducted at UAS and elsewhere by UAS faculty, staff, graduate or undergraduate students, regardless of funding or type by or through UAS.
Guided by the principles of The Belmont Report: Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research, the UAS-IRB reviews all human research protocols in accordance with federal regulations, State laws, and local and University policies. The UAS-IRB is comprised of members from various disciplines in the social/behavioral sciences, business, education, and community/lay members to assure a comprehensive review process. Through a collaborative partnership, the UAS-IRB assists investigators in the protection of human subjects. These subjects are truly a scarce resource, worthy of our gratitude, respect, and protection. The University is committed to conducting its research involving human subjects under rigorous ethical principles.
Program Description
The Chair of the UAS-IRB reviews or may delegate to another experienced Board Member the review of research studies that are less than minimal risk. The Chair convenes the full board as needed to review research studies that meet the more than minimal risk category. A minimum of 5 members is required by federal regulations for an Institutional Review Board. Studies that meet the minimal risk category (expedited review) or make the claim of an exemption or are determined not to be human subjects’ research are reviewed by the UAS-IRB on an ongoing basis. Researchers should submit materials to the IRB through the Provost’s Office 6-8 weeks prior to the anticipated start of the study in order to allow adequate time for review of the protocol.
