Activities
Being a part of the residential campus community at UAS has its privileges of convenience and the availability of support resources. Most importantly, it integrates students into a community of learners and peers, making for a close-knit neighborhood of individuals with common academic and life pursuits. In an attempt to build and nurture this active community, the Office of Residence Life sponsors several social activities and educational programs for residents to attend. Many include food and socializing, and serve as great opportunities to meet others or to take a study break!
Community-Wide Programs
The staff produce a community-wide event every month in the Lodge complete with food, decorations, and activites. Often these events have a cultural or pop entertainment theme. One such annual favorite was Casino Night, where students hit the tables and cashed in their "winnings" for the end-of-the-evening drawing for students to win hundreds of dollars in prizes. No cash was involved and everyone had a chance to win.
Another recent hit was "80's Night" where partcipants dressed in their retro wear for costume contests, competed in an 80's team trivia for prizes, and performed 80's karaoke ballads. Other past programs have included the Lodge Luau, Peking Pagoda, Alpine Retreat, St. Patty's Day Pub, and more.
CA Programs
Each CA is responsible for planning an event or activity for his/her living area monthly. These smaller-audience activities are usually tailored to the interests of the residents of that area, ranging from trips to museums, Perseverance theatre productions to hikes, movie nights, or potluck dinners. Past favorites have included Jello Wars, Chocolate Spa, camping trips, and tours of the Alaska Brewing Company. Residents are encouraged to provide ideas and input to their CAs about what type of activities they would like to see.
Community Council Programs
The Community Council plans additional activites for varied interests based on input form the residents. Such activities include movie nights, open mic nights, karaoke, and live concerts in the Lodge. In the past Community Council has produced "Fish Printing" where residents made prints from painting donated sea creatures from DIPAC Fishery, arranged alternative Thanksgiving dinners for those remaining on campus for the holiday, developed the Non-Homecoming football league and dance.
Get involved in the Community Council and bring the housing community the events you want.
"Crafty Pants" Projects
Occasionally craft projects are offered for students to spruce up their rooms or create gifts for family and friends. Cooking projects, holiday ornament-making, tie dye, scented neck warmers, and even beachcomber wind chimes are among past projects.
Educational & Wellness Programs
Between Peer Advocates (PAs), Community Advisors (CAs), and the Student Services staff, Housing hosts
several educational or enlightening programs for students. These have included resume-writing workshops, financial aid help sessions, massage technique, yoga, stress management, movie discussions, and more.
Family-Oriented & Children's Programs
With the interest and energy of family residents, activities can be planned for kids on campus. Such kid friendly activities include craft nights, movie nights, trips to the Glacier Visitor Center, nature walks, and swimming.
Housing events, activities, and workshops occur throughout the Spring and Fall semesters. Check the calendar below for current listings.
